Gordon Brown to attend Copenhagen climate change conference

The Prime Minister has confirmed that he will personally attend the United Nations climate change summit in Copenhagen next month.

Gordon Brown's spokesman announced that he had accepted Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen's invitation, adding: 'Although there is much to be done in the next 30 days, clearly this is one of the issues which is top of the Prime Minister's mind at the moment.'

Mr Rasmussen issued invitations on 12 November to all other 191 world leaders formally inviting them to the conference.

The section of the conference, which lasts from 7 to 18 December for heads of state and government leaders, will be on the last two days of the conference but a Danish government spokesperson said they would be welcome to come earlier.

US President Barack Obama said on 9 November that he would attend the summit if he believed 'we are on the brink of a meaningful agreement and my presence in Copenhagen will make a difference in tipping us over the edge'.
